Final RD 6 – Shiplaw, Peebles. 19th/20th September 2009
Well! What a finale! The curtain came down on the 2009 SACU Youth Scottish Championship this weekend at the fast hardpack track at Shiplaw, hosted by Scottish Youth MCC.
The club had gone to great lengths to make sure the track was superbly prepared for the final round of the championship, and combined with a week of dry weather all was set for a great showdown. As there are double points available for those riders who have completed all rounds, there was a great field of riders and it wasn’t over till it was over making it really exciting racing in every class. No-one could afford to slow up and mistakes were paid for heavily! Equally though, exceptional riding was rewarded !
The automatic class was hard fought as always, and as this was the first time the wee guys n gals had a Scottish title to contest, they all wanted it! The fast dry track made it easier for the wee bikes and they were all gunning for it! Places swapped regularly throughout the field. On the weekend Scott Russell took it from Troy Anderson with Daniel Chisolm and Lewis Dow tied on points for third.
Ben Edwards once again led the pack in the 65cc class. A rare mistake in race three allowed the ever improving Alexander Brown to take one win, but Edwards held onto the overall ahead of Brown and Elaine McEachern did it for the girls taking third spot with some inspired riding.
The SW 85cc class was on fire! With all to play for the speed of these guys was tremendous. Ian Findlay was back on form but he couldn’t hold off the hard charging John Adamson. Luke Cockburn had a steady weekend to hold onto the championship, with third on the weekend. There were other battles for position which were equally exciting to watch for the other championship placing.
Matthew Fleming was fastest as usual but was missing from Sunday’s line up so leaving the door open for the other contenders to score some much needed extra points. Stuart Robertson was quick to capitalise and took the overall on the weekend. Blane McNally and Andrew McNicoll took second and third.
Harry Cooper having led the 125cc class all year was on his usual form but a tangle with another bike early in race one meant he would not take maximum points, but he didn’t need to. Stuart Treloar was consistently quick all weekend taking the overall, ahead of Jamie Blair and Cooper in third.
There was a battle royal going on in the 250f class! Only ten points separated the top three going into the final round. It was all to play for and Mark Perfect had to keep Steven Craig behind him so that he didn’t steal the championship he has led all year! However Craig was on a mission and the racing between these two was fantastic and they left the rest of the field in a trail of dust! Unfortunately for Craig he made a mistake in moto 2 leaving Perfect to take another win. In the end it was too big a mountain to climb and Craig had to settle for second in the championship although he took the overall on the day. Perfect was second, and third placed man Aaron McCarroll had raced well to take third.
The adult 125cc championship class was a bit depleted and saw Ralph Yeaman take the win ahead of John Souter and Craig Hill.
Its been a fantastic championship – here’s to another great year in 2010, and well done to our new Scottish Champions!

YOUTH SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP – RD 4 – Duns Motocross Park, Borders
Langton Lees Farm, by Duns in the Scottish Borders was the place to be this weekend, 4th and 5th July if you wanted to see some awesome youth racing, as the YMX Youth Scottish Championship set up camp for Rd four of the six round series at Duns Motocross park.
Yet again the sun was shining, and Borders MXC put on a great weekend with the track nothing less than superb. Another good turnout in all classes and the old adage “..it isn’t over till it’s over..” comes to mind with really close racing all round.
Most exciting of the weekend, was the combined 125/250cc class with everyone holding their breath as the top five raced wheel to wheel and sometimes too close for comfort! Moto one saw Mark Perfect state his intentions after taking fastest qualifying, chased down by the hard charging Steven Craig, David Houston, Aiden Bruce and Arran McCarroll. Perfect took the win but it was to be his only maximum of the weekend as the rest decided to have their share. Craig was on form taking the win in race two ahead of McCarroll and Perfect. Bruce was in superb form mixing it at the top and leading moto three for a time but a big off in moto four saw him with a dnf. Houston was on the pace too but a couple of spills denied him precious points. Craig went on to take two further race wins and McCarroll took the other. Craig took the overall, ahead of McCarroll in second and Perfect third.
The 125cc class raced amongst the 250cc boys and was dominated by Harry Cooper who took four wins from five but a dnf in race five denied him the overall. Places swapped regularly amongst the other contenders but bike gremlins and a few offs changed the state of play considerably. At the end of the weekend, Dale Stewart’s consistency paid off giving him the overall; whilst Colin Smith, just back after a nasty pelvic fracture which kept him out of the last round, took second with a steady ride, and Harry Cooper held onto third.
Matthew Fleming once again annihilated the field in the Big Wheel 85cc class with another superb show of riding. Damien Farrell, William Lambie and Stuart Robertson had their own battle going on with Farrell coming out on top after Robertson had a dnf dropping him down the leaderboard. Lambie took third.
Close exciting racing was again the order of the day in the small wheel 85cc class. John Adamson and Luke Cockburn fought tooth and nail for top spot in every moto. Neither one was taking prisoners! Jay Lamb was never far behind but unluckily both Lamb and Cockburn had dnfs dropping them down the points. Riding on the limit and sometimes over it! Adamson took three maximums to take the overall. Reece Wilson was on superb form, with consistent riding all weekend to take second spot, and a fine comeback after injury saw Ian Findlay take third.
In the 65cc class, Ben Edwards got a wakeup call as his championship domination was abruptly halted! Elaine McEachern showed some girl power and was on the pace with Edwards all weekend making for some exciting battles between the two of them! Edwards eventually got the better of her with four wins, from McEachern’s one, but it went to the wire more than once! Unfortunately McEachern’s bike ground to a permanent halt in the final moto which handed second place to Alexander Brown with Ryan Archibald taking third.
Another well supported auto class saw the youngsters with a new extended auto track. Another mixed bag with some excitement as positions changed regularly. Every one of the five races had a different winner. Revelling in being part of the Scottish Championship for the first time this year, the automatic lads and lassies are making things just as exciting as any other class! Jordan Gill and Troy Anderson eventually tied on points but Anderson took the win with more higher placings, Lyle Crothers took third after chalking up his first ever race win.
The SACU Adult MX2 Championship has been better supported this year than for a good few years and providing some inspiring racing at the head of the field. Tony Craig was yet again the man to beat. Race one saw him chased hard by Tommy Fenwick, and the two of them opened up a huge gap from the rest of the field. Neil Flockhart was on the pace too taking third. Moto two saw a mistake by Craig allowing Fenwick by to open up a lead until he too had a big tumble handing the lead back to Craig. Flockhart was challenging until gearbox problems put him out of the race. Scott Findlay was quick to capitalise moving into second. Moto three again saw Craig and Fenwick racing wheel to wheel; Craig again made a mistake, but Fenwick was out of luck as half a lap later pulled off with bike problems. Again Findlay was there to take second, and John Soutar was not far adrift. Craig took the overall from Findlay and Soutar.
The adult support class was won by Stevie McKenzie ahead of Craig Trew and Graham Blacklock.
The YMX Youth Scottish Championship and SACU Adult MX2 Championship move to Rhynie in the North East for round 5, the penultimate round – on 15th/16th August.
