Round 1 YMX Youth Scottish MX Championships
11th March 2007
Comerton farm, leuchars
The long awaited start to the YMX Scotland Youth MX
Championships dawned with a dry and mild morning. With 180 plus riders
knocking on the door to get signed on it was looking like being an exciting
day. And we were most definitely not disappointed! Much work and
improvements had been done to the popular Leuchars track and believe it or
not, it was actually dusty in the morning! Yes, we were that one place in
the UK who didn’t get any rain this week – but we were made to pay for that
as the day wore on with rain arriving by the middle of the day! A fantastic
turnout in all classes let to some fierce and entertaining racing!
Twenty six eager 65 riders got things under way. The
fearless John Adamson took the first holeshot, but Greg Queen quickly took
charge! Danny Stalker and young Adamson gave chase and pushed Queen all the
way. Race two saw much tougher conditions for the wee guys with the track
now well rutted up. Hardy as they are though they bounced back and did not
give up. The final moto in the rain, really showed who the fighters were.
Despite most riders hitting the deck at some point, Queen took his third win
with Adamson hot on his heels once again, and Lothian lad, Fraser Pohlen
taking third spot. Overall, Queen took top honours with Adamson second and
Jack Taylor third.
The small Wheel 85cc class was totally dominated by
Matthew Fleming throughout all three races. In race one, Ian Stewart took
the holeshot after a couple of false starts with gremlins in the gates.
Stewart, the 2006 65 champion and having just moved to this class, gave it
his all but just couldn’t say on Flemings pace. He was eventually overhauled
by Josh Craig who was on top form and took second in all three races. A
consistent Taylor Robertson took third overall with Stewart in fourth.
There was some awesome racing in the Big Wheel 85cc
class! 28 lads bolted out of the gates and fought for track position like
their lives depended on it! At the head of the field Ewan McLaren and Daniel
Hutchison gave not an inch. It was flat out, nail biting stuff. Steven
Craig was also in top form pushing hard to stay on the pace of Mclaren and
Hutchison, as was James Hutchison who was superbly quick all day too. In
races one and two McLaren showed his mettle as he got the better of
Hutchison taking two straight wins. James Hutchison took the win in moto
three leaving Daniel to settle for three second places. McLaren eventually
took the overall with Daniel Hutchison in second and James Hutchison in
third.
The Schoolpersons 125cc class was a capacity class and
again the racing was close and everyone was out for championship points.
Ryan Blair was the man of the day dominating on his new Suzuki. Gary Sharp
was a man on a mission in the first race taking second place behind Blair.
Ryan Blair again took the flag in race two but this time it was Tommy
Fenwick in his rear view. Fenwick pushed him hard but Blair wasn’t letting
the lead slip from his grasp. Fenwick got on top in race three making Blair
settle for second and Gregory Fisher took third spot. Overall, Ryan Blair
took the podium with Fisher in second after a consistent day, and Gary
Sharp finished in third spot.
The Adult 125cc Scottish Championship class which runs
alongside the Youth Scottish Championship was hard fought. With last years
winner Scott Findlay now in the Open Class, it was all there for the taking.
Sean McDonald took on the big boys for the first time at just 15, and took
the lead in race one. Matthew Moffat soon got the better of MacDonald though
and took the first win. Jamie Duncan tried all he could to get on terms with
these youngsters but had to settle for third.. race two again saw Moffat
taking a well earned win when MacDonald failed to finish, and Duncan took
second ahead of Jamie Sandham. The wet and rutted conditions sorted the men
from the boys in race three, and the fact that it was almost dark by this
time didn’t help! Duncan finally posted a win with Roy McConnachie taking
second ahead of Ralph Yeaman. Moffat had done enough to take the spoils with
Duncan in second ahead of McConnachie in third.
The supporting automatic class saw a good turnout of
new riders and they had a great days racing despite some difficult
conditions for their wee bikes. The adult open class was won by Tony Craig
ahead of Scott Findlay.
