PRESS RELEAS: Scottish Youth Championship Rd1 Leuchars report by Neil Adamson

The Scottish Motocross season roared into action at Leuchars on Sunday with the first round of the Scottish Youth Championships and adult Mx2 Championships hosted by the Glenrothes Youth Motocross club and sponsored by Planet Motocross.  The first of six two day championship meetings started in near gale force conditions making it bracing for the spectators, marshals and officials, and making the jumps very difficult for all the racers.

The adult MX2 races were closely fought with Sean McDonald getting the holeshot in race one and then being quickly caught by a flying Scott Findlay and a race long battle ensued.  Going into the last lap the pair were bouncing off each other with Sean just getting the nod at the flag.  The second race saw Sean again lead into the first lap but by mid distance Scott had overhauled him to pull away for a comfortable win.  The third race again had Sean leading the first lap but this time Scott had hit the dirt to leave himself almost last.  Then followed what must be a candidate for the ride of the weekend as Scott set about carving through the field to take second place at the flag.  This left Sean the deserved overall winner with Scott second, and a delighted Ewan Mclaren in third.

The youth MX2 class had the honours shared with hard racing being the order of the day.  Clinton Duff was perhaps unlucky not to lift the overall with three wins, after some titanic struggles with Gary Sharp and Steven Craig.  Gary took the overall with his greater consistency with Steven in second and Clinton third.  Ryan McLean and Dale McAulay were the boys on form in the youth 125 class, the two lads lapping an impressive ten seconds a lap faster than anyone else.  During their first encounter they got a little too close to each other causing Ryan to bite the dirt and Dale to win the race.  In the last race Dale had mechanical problems while leading, allowing Ryan through to take the race win and the overall.

The 85 Big Wheel class was dominated by current British 85 Small Wheel champion, Matthew Flemming who had a clean sweep of five wins, with English invader, Taylor Dodds, in second and Cameron Pendreich, making a welcome return to racing in Scotland, third.

The 85 Small Wheel class was one of the most eagerly anticipated races with any one of about six Scottish riders able to win.  Unfortunately some more English raiders had not read the script and one of them, Michael Eccles, being the class of the field, took five straight wins with another foreigner, Sam Winterburn, taking second.  Scottish honour was upheld by Danny Stalker taking a hard fought third.

The pesky Englanders were at it again in the 65’s, Ryan Snaith showing a clean set of tyre tracks to the rest of the field with Keiran Hunter second and Jay Lamb third.

Automatic 50cc bikes with six year olds on board were probably never meant to plough through foot deep ruts and monster bumps, but all the boys racing on the Saturday put on a brave show.  I’ll bet that every one of them hit the deck at some point.  After three close races Ryan Archibald come out on top with one win, Lewis Dow was second, also with one win.
