Borders MXC

The Scottish motocross scene will continue to see new and exciting changes in 2008 with the introduction of the newly formed borders motocross club who intend to run there events at the exciting Duns Motoparc in the Scottish borders. The track is one that caters for riders of all levels and recently underwent a major revamp by renowned track builder Jonny Douglas Hamilton. The club intends to run classes from auto to adult open and due to demand have also decided to run an over 35 adult class to help cater for the stiffer riders out there.
The first meeting for the club will be held on the weekend of 3rd and 4th of May which will coincide with the third round of the Youth Scottish Championship and Scottish Adult MX2 championship. The club round for youths will be run on the Saturday and the Sunday will cater for the adult club riders. With Duns being the furthest south venue on the Championship calendar it is hoped that more riders from the south will make the short trip over the border to take part and sample this exciting track with its huge table tops, uphill triple jumps which challenge riders of all grades and ability.
The first round will be postal entries only and entry forms can be down loaded from the club website www.bordersmx.co.uk which also has more information on both the club and the Duns Motoparc.

Neil Flockhart Riding Supercross in New Zealand

Latest update 31st Jan  Woodville GP.

The Woodville Gp, which runs over 3days attracts riders from all over New Zealand and Europe. This event has been running for about 46/47 years!it runs over 3 days with classes ranging from 50's veterens which was won by World vet "Kiwi Tony Cooksley"

The track is only used once a year for this event, the rest of the year its occupied by cows and sheep. Its quite a traditional motocross track, fast with real choppy bumps, not much in the way of jumps. It was watered and prepped real nice, the conditions on the day were perfect, warm but not too hot, a bit overcast but no rain! I would compare the racing over here to Scottish Championships but only with some faster riders and a few GP Stars! We had 3 x 20 minute motos for my class, then there was an invitational race aswell, just a mix of the top riders from each class. Coppins won easily, he did have some good competition from Cody Coupar and Daryl Hurley, but he had it well under controland had some left in the tank!

I finished 8th overall, should've had top 5 like I wanted but had a tough day! I got taken down at the first corner in the first race then had a nother crash half way round the first lap, which made for a tough time getting going again, I came back from 36th to 16th, that kinda killed my overall result. The next two moto's I started and finished better, with a 5th in the second moto and a 7th in the 3rd.

Best wishes from down under Neil Flockhart

Neil Flockhart 2006 Scottish Adult Champion try's his hand at Supercross in New Zealand riding a brand new 08 450 yam for his mate 'BIG MAC' who runs a Yamaha dealership called Maidstone Yamaha. He's getting help from pirelli tyres and is running a Two Brothers exhaust supplied by Minibikepro in the Uk. Mac has given him the bike to do 5 races,3 supercross and 2 motocross. On saturday the 19th he raced round 2 of their supercross Championship at Tokoroa. He finisished 4th overall behind Daryll Hurley 1st, Scott Collumb 2nd and Nick Saunders 3rd. He was running second to Hurley in two of the finals for a few laps until arm pump got the better of him, Neils says "I think 2001 was the last time I raced a supercross! I dont think a podium at the next two rounds is out of the question though!"Click for larger image of Neil and his sponsor Big Mac

This weekend sunday 27th he is racing the biggest motocross race in New Zealand, the Woodville GP, Coppins is riding as well as the best of the rest of New Zealand! Neils says "Im feelin good about it, been doing plenty riding and training so im aiming for top 5 this weekend! I'll let you know how it goes!"

Melville MCC

Paul Edmondson is riding in our Hare and Hound on Sunday the 16th December. The three times World Enduro Champion will be accompanied by Jason Thomas who is one of Britain's promising young talents. This event offer riders a rare opportunity to ride with Paul Edmondson and watch the style of a rider who won the Weston Beach Race outright. Ricky Mair has also signed up with enduro regulars Derek Little, Paul Chatham, Allyn Scotland and Scott Maxwell.

The track builders have set a loop for the Motocross riders who do not want to race through the woods and their race is for 2 hours. This was done as there were many motocross riders who requested it. So far there has been a poor take up on this option and if it is to go ahead I need about another 20 entries.

I realise Motocross riders like to keep their options open until the last minute and Ian Gilhooley will make allowances for this. Entries are available to download at www.melvlllemc.co.uk or www.scottishenduros.co.uk

This event is designed to be a fun day and new riders should also enjoy the set up.

I have also attached a short press release regarding Paul Edmondson, please give this event some coverage on your website. Thank you for your support.

Yours in sport

2008 YMX Scottish Championship

From YMX Chairman Jim Smith

Following recent talk amongst riders/parents etc with regards to next year’s YMX Youth Championship, below is some information on the facts and the reasoning behind it, to quash the speculation which has been flying around.

As chairman, my aim has always been to try and improve things. This can not be achieved by standing still. I believe that we have a huge amount of youth talent in Scotland yet few are getting any further than Youth Scottish Championship level. We need to look at different ways of doing things in order to move forward. If, along the way we sometimes get things wrong we simply readjust and do things differently. We don’t go backwards. All around us our sport is developing and moving forward – I do not want to see Youth Motocross in Scotland still in the doldrums when everyone and everything else has moved forward.

At the YMX Committee meetings throughout the year, we have discussed at length a possible format for the 2008 championships. 2007 has been too many rounds and a big strain on both the dates and peoples pockets travelling to 9 rounds. A two day format was proposed, discussed at length, and agreed UNANIMOUSLY by those attending the meetings. (and been minuted that this is the case)

 The proposed format:

Maximum six rounds, all at different tracks, each over two days.

Saturday will be youths only. Practice plus three blocks of races; or longer practice/qualifying plus two blocks of racing. (this has still to be confirmed)

Sunday will be Adult 125 Championship/adult support practice plus Block one first, then two further blocks of racing for everyone.

This equates to Youths getting either four or five races over the weekend, and keeps Adults to Sunday only (allowing for the fact that a lot of adults work Saturdays and tend to come on Sunday mornings rather than stay over Saturday night)

For the youths, the worst points scoring race from each round would be dropped. The last round of the championship would earn double points , provided you had attended all of the previous rounds. This will add some excitement to the final round.

Why 2 days?

  • Travelling is one of the biggest expenses, so it was felt it was more worthwhile for people to travel if they were getting two days of racing rather than one.
  • Numbers have been dropping – again it was felt we could attract more riders from the South and Ireland , as well as elsewhere in Scotland (eg Orkneys, Shetlands etc) if it was two days as it is then worth the journey. Our lads/lassies would then have better and more diverse competition, and it would raise our standard.
  • Track familiarity. Racing would become better as the weekend went on as everyone would become more familiar with the track. How many of us as parents, lament that the kids are just getting warmed up by race three when it is time to go home? It reduces the advantage of local knowledge.
  • Social aspect . The two fun weekends (currently GYMCC and SYMCC) plus the Leuchars national are the best supported events in the calendar. Why? It is a social event as well as racing. Two days at each different track gives all the clubs the opportunity to hold a ‘fun weekend’ and allows parents to relax somewhat rather than the mad dash to get the kids home before midnight .

We are only looking at a further 4 events which takes in a Saturday.

  • Home time . The 2 day format would allow people to get home early on Sunday instead of the current 9pm onwards as it mostly is. This is offputting for people with very young children as they have school next day. Also it doesn’t make any allowance for any long stoppages.
  • Raising the profile. If we want to be able to help our young riders to go onto bigger and better things in their sport we have to have a higher profile. Being Scottish Champions has to have more meaning than it currently does. This is OUR national Championship and we should all treat it as such instead of constantly running it down. A higher profile will attract more press coverage, more sponsors, and there fore there is more money in the pot to help the clubs and help our riders to develop.
  • Cost We are looking at ways to ensure that the cost to do the championship does not escalate and through sponsorship, and more effective use of the tracks/club resources we feel that running over two days will give competitors better value for money (contrary to what has been said elsewhere!)
  • Marshalling. This is an ever present bone of contention. If we can increase numbers and with this format, it is hoped that each rider will only need to marshall for one out of the two days. I feel that this is a positive step forward for our championship, and whilst I appreciate that there may be some people that find it an inconvenience due to their own circumstances, there seem to be many more people who see it as a good thing. After all, if our youngsters were involved in almost ANY other sport, it would take place on Saturdays. Football, Rugby , Tennis, swimming galas, even karting! etc are almost exclusively held on Saturdays.

Let us work together with a positive attitude to make this work, and I am happy to discuss further with anyone who has valid points to raise.

Caithnessmotox Clubs Ravenhill Track

Ravenshill is west of Thurso, approx. 2 miles from the Scrabster junction. The track is just over 1000 metres long if you include the 100 metre start straight, generally 7-8 metres wide, there is a couple of table tops (that will be made bigger & longer when we get more material) up & down hills and a step up (for the brave) as it leads into a downhill right turn !!!We just got permission from the landowner to allow us to make an access road and hard standing for the pit area.It is an SACU certified track and we run under SACU National Restricted permits. The track is open to club members for practice as follows:- Tuesday nights up to 8 o'clock for bikes up to 85cc Big Wheel class.Thursday nights up to 8 o'clock for 125cc Schoolboys & Adults.Sunday morning from 11am to 2pm for bikes up to 85cc Big Wheel class.Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm for 125cc Schoolboys & Adults. I feel that it is not bad for our (CMXC's) first attempt and we are certainly looking to develop it further. Our next race is the 2nd of Sept.and then the 16th Sept. with Signing in / Scrutineering 9am and all riders to provide a marshall. Maybe worth mentioning that any southern riders who are planning coming up this way for the annual Orkney beach race on the 9th Sept. that they are are more than welcome to come along and have a look around the track if they are in the area. All contact details are easily found on www.caithnessmotox.co.uk

BYMX Nationals Rd 2 Culham

What a result from Matthew Fleming in the SW 85 class at BYMX at Culham at the weekend! Three convincing wins from four races had the Scottish contingent in real party mood!  Just what Scottish Motocross needs and just what Matthew deserves!

Ten of our riders headed to the deep south to take part and all made it to the end with not one dnf between them!  Mind you it was a close call for Robert Smith in the 65cc class  with a seized engine during practice – a quick sprint, transponder in hand and the generosity of the Pohlen family allowing him to use Fraser’s spare bike meant he was able to both qualify and race, finishing 23rd overall, with Fraser riding superbly to end the weekend in 18th. Our Big Wheel 85cc boys were all suffering from blisters and employing all variety of remedies – Ewan Mclaren was consistently inside the top ten finishing in 8th position. Steven Craig again rode like his life depended on it with an excellent 14th. Mark Perfect took 26th and Colin Smith was 33rd after suffering a puncture in race two. The premier class was as always awesome to watch! Despite overheating brakes in every race, Tommy Fenwick came home in 9th overall. Sean MacDonald was 20th after he dnf'd the last race with badly blistered hands. Ryan Blair struggled with his suspension all weekend coming in 31st

Rd 3 is at Brampton on 19th/20th May. Not too far to travel so why not come along and support the boys!

BYMX National at Leuchars 28th & 29th July 2007

Diana McLuckie is the secretary for the event and would like to invite local riders for the support classes.  If you would like an entry contact her on 01620824970 or 07903017381 or email d447@btinternet.com

Entries are VERY limited for the 65cc class (entries  for the 65 are now full, any further entries will go onto the reserve list) as they will ONLY be running one class of these to make up to 40 riders and some spaces are available for all other classes.  It will be a first come first served basis.

Anyone who would like to offer a helping hand before, during and after the event would be very welcome.  Again contact Diana  or Terry Connolly.

BYMX Nationals Rd 1

What a weekend for our Scottish riders at the first round of the BYMX National Championships held at Desertmartin this weekend!! (6th/7th April)
Mathew Fleming was brilliant in the SW85 class! Superb racing saw him take 3rd overall from an incredibly fast class of riders- with Mathews pace at the moment I think we could see him winning some races at National level very soon!!
Tommy Fenwick in the Premier 125cc class was in superb form too. He was right up there and even led race three for the first few races until he unfortunately stalled and ended up almost last but made an amazing comeback. Tommy was a superb 8th overall. Also in the premier class were Sean MacDonald who was 25th despite a catalogue of bike problems all weekend, Colin McLuckie who was 27th and Ryan Blair who was 28th on his first trip to Ireland, and first attempt at the British.
The awesomely fast 85cc Big wheel class saw a good turnout of Scottish riders. Ewan McLaren was on top form riding in the top five for most of the weekend, but two punctures and a broken clutch saw him drop to 7th overall - still a great result. Steven Craig rode brilliantly in his first National to finish 12th overall with Mark Perfect coming in at 24th and Colin Smith at 35th. Fraser Pohlen and Robert Smith flew the flag in the 65cc class, both having bike gremlins at some stage of the weekend, but still, Fraser finished 19th with Robert in 23rd.
Clinton Duff came along too and rode the 125cc support. He dominated all four races and won the overall - great stuff!
They all head off to Culham in two weeks for round two - good luck lads!!

Scottish Adult Championship travels to Elgin this weekend for round 2, who will be at the top of the table on Sunday night?
