The much
anticipated home round (Rd 6 of 7) of the BYMX Nationals was upon us this
weekend 28th/29th July. GYMCC had done a superb job on
the track so all the riders both local and visiting had a lot to look
forward to. Oh, and the weather was good !!! (mostly!)
Well done to the
club, and of course to Bobby for the fantastic night of music on Saturday
(as well as Ian with his pipes!)
Virtually all of
our national riders had mixed fortunes over the weekend, although Matty
Fleming (SW 85cc) was once again on form, and despite winning only one of
the four races, he took second overall and stays at the top of the table in
the championship. The Premier (250F) lads had everything to fight for, and
for the most part their knowledge of their home track paid off. Sean
MacDonald was both fast and consistent all weekend, and finished a fantastic
6th overall. Tommy Fenwick was as usual fighting it out with the
leading riders and took two seconds and a third, but unfortunately had bike
problems in the third race leaving him with a dnf. He still managed 8th
overall in what is a hugely competitive class. Ryan Blair had a frustrating
weekend, ending up 19th overall whilst Colin McLuckie also had
bad luck with a dnf in race three finishing further down the field than he
should.
The 65cc boys had
a difficult weekend as the very soft sand made it hard work for their wee
wheels to get through. I guess almost every rider in this class had hit the
deck at least once over the weekend. Both Fraser Pohlen and Robert Smith
struggled through and Fraser finished the weekend in 15th whilst
Robert was 20th.
What can I say
about the BW 85 boys!!! After taking Haverigg by storm at the last round,
Steven Craig was again hitting the headlines but not for the same reasons!
During race one he fell hard knocking himself out for a time and was then
sent off to hospital by air ambulance for a check over. Fortunately there
were no injuries and he was OK. He attempted to race again on day two but
was not as OK as he thought so retired from the race and decided to give
himself some time to recover properly! Ewan McLaren ended the weekend in 8th
overall but he had his share of the paramedics attention too with a severe
asthma attack following race two. Colin Smith had an uneventful weekend
riding consistently to take 23rd overall.
The last round is
at the reknowned Hawkestone track way off in October, so we will have to
wait until then to see if Matty can take the British Champion title and to
see how they all get on.
