BYMX - Rd 4 Pontrilas

Mixed weather and mixed fortunes for the Scottish boys at Rd 4 of the BYMX Nationals at Pontrilas, way down in the deep south, on the Welsh border.

The temperatures soared making it very hot and dusty for the riders on Saturday. The organisers tried to water it, but the clay soil became treacherously slippy (think ice rink) when they did so, so after many complaints and several accidents, it was felt that the dust was the lesser of the two evils.
The dilemma was soon resolved however as heavy (in fact torrential) rain on Saturday night removed the possibility of dust! But then the sun was really hot again on Sunday making it something of a Turkish bath! or should I say mud bath!
The Junior 65's were first out as usual on Saturday, but the order was reversed on Sunday due to the extremely muddy conditions following the rain. Robert Smith had a great day on Saturday but bike problems on Sunday saw him finish just outside the top 20 in 21st. Fraser Pohlen had a trouble free weekend finishing 18th overall.
Matthew Fleming didn't have the weekend he was hoping for although it was still a good result by anyone else's standards!. Two fifth's a sixth and an 9th, but he still got 4th overall and holds onto his lead in the championship. The difficult conditions on Sunday certainly mixed things up a bit!
More mixed fortunes for the Big Wheel boys! Ewan McLaren had all sorts of bike problems, with a weekend he would probably rather forget finishing in 17th place, while Steven Craig faired better with an excellent 12th at the end of the four races. Colin Smith after a few spills was 34th.
Day one (Saturday) unfortunately saw Mark Perfect (BW 85) and Sean McDonald (Premier 125) fall foul of the slippy conditions following the bowser treatment. Both had to abandon the remainder of the weekends racing, Mark with a knee injury and Sean with a wrist injury - hope you both recover soon guys.
Ryan Blair and Colin McLuckie were left to fly the flag in the premier class with Sean's re-tiral from the weekends racing and Tommy Fenwick's absence. Ryan had a good weekend including a fantastic 10th in race two - almost beating Lewis King (just pipped two corners from the finish!) who won the overall! Ryan finished the weekend 18th. Colin McLuckie struggled with the mud on Sunday, dnf-ing race 3, but still held on to 28th.
Round five is closer to home at Haverigg on 8th/9th July, so hopefully all our injured boys will be back racing, and those with bike problems get them sorted!!.  We can look forward to some great racing in the sand, and then we are at home at Leuchars for rd 6 at the end of July!
